THE LIFT CLUB, BRIGHTON

Saturday 2nd September 2000

On the weekend I see a band that has changed the way I feel about what I am doing - after substantial sets by Delicate AWOL Rob Dainton & Phil Hargreaves and Rothko - BRITISH SEA POWER - a band without a soundcheck, dressed in identical lake district uniforms - self described as Laibach meets Belle & Sebastian - formed by 2 brothers - takes the stage and in minutes - guitar amp catches on fire & I have to switch it off - sprawling across the tiny stage - perched atop the cabinets and chairs - assaulting the audience with a low end chaos and an infernal mid range fist fight ramraid - they were more than they said they would be - and for a few minutes - I can see a band like Joy Division or Slint or My Bloody Valentine in full flow - this is a revalation - that was British Sea Power...
